The unique design of Awanama is inspired by the symbolic letter on the bottle, which stands out like a crest and is comprised of a Japanese word meaning “raw”. This is further emphasized by patterns inspired by Japanese cut glass, enhancing the Japanese essence of the novel sake. The black color of the bottle not only screens out light, preserving the sake, but also makes the white symbol stand out, adding to its luxurious appearance.
The design of Awanama is not just about aesthetics. It also incorporates new technology to circulate raw sake without heat treatment, making it possible to bottle the sake in a new way. This innovative approach to sake bottling is a testament to Ishikawa's commitment to delivering the authentic savor of sake to the rest of the world.
With dimensions of 67mm in width, 67mm in depth, and 200mm in height, the Awanama bottle is finely shaped and light in weight. The design takes full advantage of the technology that made it possible to preserve the liquid inside the bottle by sticking the light shielding film to a normal plastic bottle.
Awanama was first introduced in March 2018 in Niigata, Japan. Since then, it has been gaining recognition for its unique design and innovative approach to sake bottling. In 2019, it was awarded the Platinum A' Packaging Design Award, which recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, genius, and contribute to societal wellbeing.
The Awanama design is a testament to Ryuta Ishikawa's innovative approach to design and his commitment to bringing the authentic flavor of sake to the world. With this design, Ishikawa hopes that people overseas will experience the fresh taste of sake and gain a new appreciation for Japanese culture.
